SCT EGT SENSOR KIT — X4 / BDX / LIVEWIRE
Metal shavings in the manifold end up in the turbo. Pack the drill bit and tap with heavy grease to catch them, and go over the hole with a small magnet before the probe goes in. The tap is tapered. Stop as soon as the threads reach slightly deeper than the inside of the manifold; tap too deep and the fitting screws in too far.
Fitting the SCT 9817 EGT sensor and module kit to a 2003–2021 Ford Super Duty Power Stroke and reading exhaust gas temperature on an X4, BDX or Livewire. The kit is the EGT module, the stainless thermocouple probe with its 1/8" NPT fitting, the EGT sensor cable and the Firewire cable to the device. You need a 5/16" drill bit and a 1/8" NPT tap from any hardware store. The probe goes in the driver side exhaust manifold, at the rear near the driveline.
Steps
1 Locate the spot on the exhaust manifold

2 Drill and tap the manifold
Drill a 5/16" hole, then tap it 1/8" NPT following the tap's own instructions. Grease the bit and the tap heavily to hold the shavings. The tap is tapered, so only go until its threads are slightly deeper than the inside wall.
3 Clean the hole and fit the probe
Check for shavings with a magnet and remove any before going further. Screw the tapered end of the fitting into the manifold until its tip is flush with the inside of the exhaust path, no deeper, and tighten it with a small wrench without over-torquing. Slide the probe in so its tip sits in the centre of the exhaust flow and tighten the top nut just enough to hold it.
4 Mount the EGT module
Anywhere away from heat and heavy vibration, and not on or near the engine. Zip-tie it to the interior or the firewall.
5 Route a cable through the firewall
Which cable depends on where the module sits: the EGT sensor cable if the module is inside, the Firewire cable if it is in the engine bay. Decide before opening the factory hole in the firewall. Cover the hole with aluminium tape once the cable is through. The Firewire cable tucks neatly between the driver door sill and the dash.
6 Plug in the module and the device
The EGT sensor cable, with the two-prong connector, plugs into the EGT module. The Firewire cable plugs into your tuner.
7 Set up the gauge
Connect the tuner's OBDII cable to the port in the truck, go to the Gauges/Datalog screen and add the EGT parameter to a gauge. The screens for the X4 and the Livewire TS are pictured.
