LWN TUNING PROCEDURE — 16-22 DURAMAX 2.8L
Follow the steps in the order given. Deviating from it can leave faults that need OEM tools or replacement parts to clear. Do not disconnect the throttle valve, EGR or DEF components until the tune is flashed and the truck has idled through at least 2 key cycles with no DTCs or DIC warnings. Never interrupt a flash.
Tuning a 2016–2022 Chevy Colorado / GMC Canyon 2.8L Duramax (LWN) in the order that avoids stubborn faults: a DIC reset to clear stored emissions data, then the full flash of the tune, then two clean key cycles, and only then the disconnects. The truck must be stock with no active emissions faults before you start. The DIC reset file is licensed and programmed exactly like a tune file. Either an AutoCal or a pass-through flash from a PC will do; both are covered.
Steps
1 Confirm the DEF system is fully connected and the tank is over 60% full
The DIC reset only works with the DEF system intact. If you would rather run a DPF regeneration cycle to clear the stored emissions data, that replaces the reset file.
2 Full flash the DIC reset file onto the ECM
Use whichever programming method you prefer, AutoCal or pass-through. The reset file is licensed and programmed the same way as a tune file, so the tune steps below apply to it.
3 Start the truck and let it idle in Park
Leave it until it either shuts off on its own or has idled for at least 10 minutes, whichever comes first.
4 Turn the ignition off once the reset has completed
You can now move on to the tune.
5 AutoCal: plug into the OBD port and turn the ignition on, engine off
Skip the AutoCal steps if you are flashing pass-through from a PC.
6 AutoCal: select Tune Tool, then Tuning, then Program Full, then your tune file
7 AutoCal: accept the prompt to license the vehicle
Select Yes.
8 AutoCal: let the flash finish, then turn the ignition off and wait out the countdown
Do not interrupt the flash. When it completes, turn the ignition off and follow the on-screen instructions, letting the countdown finish before starting the vehicle.
9 Pass-through: save the tune file from your email and connect the device
Put the file on your desktop or somewhere easy to find. Connect the device to your computer and to the vehicle's OBD port. Skip the pass-through steps if you used the AutoCal.
10 Pass-through: open the tune in V8 Scan and Tune and choose Full Flash
Select F3: Tune, then Open, and pick your tune file. With it open, select F7: Full Flash.
11 Pass-through: license the controller
Turn the ignition on with the engine off. Select Activate License, and answer Yes to permanently licensing the controller. Once licensed, turn the ignition off and follow the on-screen prompts.
12 Pass-through: full flash the tune
Turn the ignition on with the engine off and select Full Flash. Do not interrupt the flash. When it completes, turn the ignition off and follow the on-screen instructions, letting the countdown finish before starting the vehicle.
13 Pass-through: repeat the flash for transmission tuning
Repeat the open, license and full flash steps with the transmission tune file, if you have one.
14 Start and idle the truck through at least 2 key cycles
Confirm there are no active DTCs or DIC warnings after tuning. If there are, contact support before going any further.
15 Disconnect the throttle valve, EGR and DEF components
Only now, and only if no DIC warnings are present. The reference photos show each plug that must be disconnected.
16 Final checks
Confirm that the DIC reset was performed, the tune file has been full-flashed onto the truck, the DEF system is unplugged, and the throttle valve and EGR are unplugged.
