H&S MINI MAXX — INSTALL CHECKS & TROUBLESHOOTING
When the install asks whether the DPF is present or removed, select DPF Removed. Selecting DPF Present with the filter gone leaves the check engine light on and the tune only half applied. If a Duramax shows code 316, or the tuner reports an unrecognised SPRA part number, the truck has to be flashed back to stock before the Mini Maxx will install. That is a dealer or diesel shop job, not something the tuner can do.
What to check when an H&S Mini Maxx install does not go to plan: a check engine light that stays on, the vehicle selection screen that keeps coming back, error codes 312 and 316 on a Duramax, and the unrecognised part number screens. Which trucks it fits: Ford Power Stroke 2008–2016. Tunes for the 2015 are current; see the 2016 note below. GM Duramax LML 2011–2014 only. It will not install on a 2015 or newer LML. Check the 10th digit of your VIN before buying: D is 2013, E is 2014, F is 2015, G is 2016. Tech support and a one-year warranty are included with every Mini Maxx we sell.
Steps
1 Check engine light still on after the install
The most common and most overlooked problem is thinking the tune has been installed when it has not. Nearly every time the light is on after an install, the on-screen instructions were not followed through.
First read and clear the diagnostic trouble codes from the tuner. If the codes and the light come back, check the tune status: Menu, Settings, Tune Status. If it shows Not Installed, go back and run the install again. When it asks whether the DPF is present or removed, select DPF Removed.
2 Vehicle selection keeps asking again
You must select your vehicle for the right tunes to load. Occasionally the tuner keeps returning to the vehicle list even after you have picked the truck several times. This is a known but rare fault in the screen unit. Get in touch and we will swap the unit under warranty.
3 Stuck on Initializing Communication
Press the top left button on the tuner. If that does not clear it, unplug the tuner, plug it back in and try again.
4 Unrecognized Part Number SPRAxxxx.MM
A part number starting SPRA means a Spartan tuner was installed on this PCM at some point. Spartan tuners take over the PCM and leave a footprint that stops other devices loading.
The truck has to be flashed back to stock, its as-built calibration, before the Mini Maxx will install. A diesel repair shop or dealer can do this with an Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS). Once the PCM is back to factory, install the Mini Maxx as normal.
5 Unrecognized Part Number on a 6.7L Power Stroke
Take the SD card out of the tuner and put it in a computer. Open the 6.7L Ford folder and find the file whose part number is closest to the one the tuner showed. Rename that file to the exact unrecognised part number, put the SD card back in the tuner, reselect the year of your Ford, then go to Install Download. It should go through.
6 Duramax error code 312
On a 2007–2010 Duramax, code 312 needs the unit unlocked and reset. Go to Show Settings and hold the bottom left key for 10 seconds until a password screen appears. Enter unlock code 0468, then select Reset Unit.
Go straight to Install Download afterwards. Do not reselect the truck and year.
7 Duramax error code 316
Code 316 means the tuner is not communicating with the ECM, which happens when there is a tune on the truck now or one has been loaded in the past. The truck has to be flashed back to stock at your local dealer before the Mini Maxx will install.
8 2015 and 2016 Power Stroke
The Mini Maxx works on the 2008–2016 Ford Power Stroke. It is often said to stop at 2014, but tune development did not stop there and our tuners carry the current 2015 Power Stroke tunes.
Some 2016 trucks have a crankcase ventilation sensor. Installing the Mini Maxx on one of those sets a check engine light and a P04DB code. The truck runs properly, but the light stays on.
9 2015 and newer Duramax LML: it will not work
The Mini Maxx only works on the 2011–2014 LML Duramax. It will not install on a 2015 or newer truck, and the install stops at a screen telling you so.
Check the 10th digit of the VIN before buying: D is 2013, E is 2014, F is 2015, G is 2016.
