UNLOCK CABLE & SOTF SWITCH — 16-19 TITAN XD 5.0L CUMMINS
Do this after the tune is installed and confirmed, with both batteries disconnected.
Routing the unlock cable permanently through the firewall and wiring the switch-on-the-fly (SOTF) switch on a 2016–2019 Nissan Titan XD 5.0L Cummins. The factory air box comes out first for access; if you are also fitting the cold air intake, it does not go back. Tools: electrical fish tape or a very long screwdriver, flat head screwdriver, 11/32" socket, 10mm socket, strong tape, Windex, zip ties, flush cut pliers, a drill for the switch mount. Kit: SOTF kit (plastic wire cover, connector, wired switch, knob, number backing, drill template, Allen key), blank grey plug P/N 38150-6.
Steps
1 Unplug the MAF connector on the intake hose
Place a flat head screwdriver on the red tab of the black connector and gently twist to slide it to the unlock position. It moves about 1/4". Do not force it further. Then press down on the back tab with your thumb and pull the connector out.
2 Unplug the grey connector on top of the filter housing
Thumb on the back of it, then pull.
3 Loosen the 2 hose clamps at the back of the air filter housing
Flat head or 11/32" socket.
4 Open the housing and remove the filter
Undo the 2 black spring clamps on top of the housing near the driver side hood strut, lift the lid off, and remove the old filter. Then use a 10mm socket to loosen the 2 bolts at the bottom inside the box (they stay in their rubber grommets) and remove the 1 bolt near the top at the back of the box.
5 Cut the 2 zip ties and lift the air box out
The ties hold the wire loom and a hose to the side of the box near the firewall. Watch the A/C line; you may need to wiggle the box back and forth.
If you are fitting the cold air intake, the box stays out. Otherwise it goes back in once the wiring is done.
6 Fish the unlock cable through the hood latch grommet
The recommended route is through the hood latch cable grommet on the firewall, running under the hood from driver side to passenger side. You do not need to de-pin the harness. Spray Windex on both ends of the grommet, push a very long screwdriver or electrical fish tape through from inside the cab into the engine bay (tough but possible), tape the black connector to its tip in a gradual step so it pulls through, and slowly pull it back into the cab. Be careful not to puncture the other side of the grommet; if you do, use that hole.
7 Connect the grey triangle connector behind the radiator overflow
Remove the black cover from the black triangle connector on the truck's wire loom there; it has 2 wires, green and yellow. Plug your new grey triangle into it. Zip-tie the excess wire along the loom up to the firewall and over to the hood latch grommet, keeping clear of hot spots.
8 Feed the 3 SOTF switch wires through the same grommet into the cab
Red, white and black. Feed your wire tool from the engine bay into the cab, tape the wires to it and pull them through.
9 Pin the switch wires into the grey plug
Slot 1 red, slot 2 black, slot 3 white. Remove the black rear cover of the grey plug and the blue weather seal inside it. Pass the 3 wires through the black cover, then through the blue seal, and insert each into its slot. Slide the blue seal back into the connector and push the black cover up until it snaps.
10 Plug the switch into the engine harness and blank the empty connector
Disconnect the connector leading to the front of the engine below the oil fill port, and plug your new SOTF connector into it. Fit the supplied black wire protector as needed and secure the wiring to the loom back to the hood latch grommet. Insert the blank grey plug (P/N 38150-6) into the now-empty connector on the side of the engine.
11 Mount the SOTF switch in the cab
Placement is up to you. Some drill the dash to the right of the knee; others remove the light under the dash and relocate it. The example uses the lower left of the dash: remove the 2 bottom screws and pop the lower section out, remove the screws holding the blank switch spaces, centre the drill template, and trim the square portion on the back to just the face plate. The round switch presses into the plastic cage and stays put.
